Happy Birthday Corydon!
First Capital of Indiana
200 Years Young
1808 -- 2008
Let us reminisce over the past
200 years of Historic Corydon.
Corydon started out in 1804, as just a pioneer village with a few log cabins. By 1808 Corydon became a town. In 1813 it became a territorial capital, and in 1816 was made the first capital of Indiana. This made Corydon the 19th State of the Union.
In 1820, a party of explorers and surveyers led by John Tipton ventured from Corydon to locate the exact center of the state -- where a new capital would be established. This was named Indianapolis.
Because Corydon did not remain to be the capital, it was able to continue as a small town. It's historic buildings and memories are still much the way they were two centuries ago. This prosperous small town remains a captivating piece of history.
To bring the past 200 years together, Corydon celebrated it's 200th birthday, throughout 2008.
